VP Łukasz Kroplewski led the delegation of the International Centre of Excellence on Coal Mine Methane operating at the Chamber of the Natural Gas Industry to the opening ceremony of a similar Centre of Excellence in China. The Polish Geological Institute was represented by dr Janusz Jureczka, Director of the Upper-Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Institute − National Research Institute, the Central Mining Institute – by dr inż. Jacek Skiba, and the Oil and Gas Institute – by dr inż. Piotr Kasza.
The International Centre of Excellence on Coal Mine Methane in China launched its operations on September 24th 2017 during the China Mining 2017 conference in Tianjin. Its key objective is to improve the safety of miners. Like its Polish counterpart, the Chinese Centre of Excellence will contribute to the development of CBM and CMM extraction technologies (pre-mining and coal mine methane extraction). The International Centres of Excellence in Poland and China are where business and science meet halfway. Both institutions operate under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
“The opening was a success. We are glad to see China open its own ICE-CCM after ICE Poland was launched in June. Both the Polish and Chinese ICE declared their intention to cooperate and share knowledge and experience”, said Łukasz Kroplewski, Vice President of the PGNiG Management Board for Development. “As one of Poland’s largest corporations, PGNiG must seek and build strategic international partnerships. This event proved that we can act as first movers and that one of the world’s biggest superpowers actually wants to develop the CBM and CMM technologies with us”, he added.
The upcoming Session of the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane, to take place in Geneva in November, will be another knowledge sharing and networking opportunity. During the event, both International Centres of Excellence will present their plans for the coming years. Polish and Chinese experts will also discuss how to strengthen the ties between the two Centres. A visit of the Chinese delegation to Poland is scheduled for next year.
